Diagnostic Writing Sample

Throughout this semester you will work in groups. You will sit with your group every day, engage in small group discussion with them, help one another with your assignments (in particular, the two papers), and generally function as a team. Groups are not assigned based on experience or skill level, but rather based upon other kinds of affinities; I do my best to group students with similar goals and interests.

To that end, I would like each of you to compose 2-3 paragraphs that will help me form you into these groups. Give me whatever information you think might be pertinent, but in particular I'm interested in:

1. Why you took this course (think deeply about this question; even if you're only taking this to fulfill a requirement, there must be a reason you chose this particular course rather than another).

2. What you hope to achieve in this course; are you an aspiring fiction writer hoping to learn some new techniques? are you considering an English major and using this class to dip your toe in the water? do you just want to read some entertaining stories?

3. What kinds of stories do you like? They don't have to be short stories or novels; they might be movies, TV shows, or anecdotes your friends tell you. Write a few adjectives that describe your favorite stories: are they funny? surprising? weird? suspenseful? emotional?

Write your paragraphs on a sheet of paper; DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR NAME ON THE PAGE!
