In Family Fang Kevin Wilson
introduced the reader to a pressing dilemma that Annie is battling in one of
her movies. The director informed her that for the next scene she must be
topless. Annie struggles to decide whether to do it or not, but this struggle goes
much deeper than just deciding whether to take her top off or not. This scene
reveals to us the sense of identify Annie is struggling to find along with the
lack of support she can find when faced with these certain problems.
Although Annie is an upcoming actor she hates
what she is doing. Annie is just doing what she knows because her parents
forced her and her brother to play roles in there public performances. She
looks to other people to make the decisions for her, “if Lucy had told her to
take her top off, she would have not questioned it”. This quote shows the
reader that Annie can’t make these decisions for herself, and when she finally
does make a decision she completely over does it and diminishes her reputation.
She has no one go to when she is down which is sad in a way. “Sally, honestly,
it might be you”, this quote shows that Annie comes to the realization that her
publicists may be her best friend in the world. This shows that Annie is really
out on her because she has no close friends to be there for and comfort her
when she is down. She is by herself in this crazy chaotic world, and is
struggling to find her way of life.
The reader
also finds bust in this misguided situation. Both of the Fang children seem to
struggle in finding their place in life. Both don’t seem to have very many
friends in their life, and no support to comfort them. Buster finds comfort in
shooting potato guns, and Annie finds comfort in walking around topless. This
misguided way of life leads one to wonder if the upbringing of these two
children had anything to do with this misguided way of life they are now
facing.
