Wrapping Up Home Land

So many things seem to have changed at the end of Home Land; Lewis can drive, he has a new job, a relationship, some people have died, others have gone to jail. The reader is left to wonder, however, whether these changes are merely superficial, or reflective of real growth in Lewis's character.

With your group members, discuss whether you would like to argue that, at the end of the novel, Lewis has grown, or that he hasn't really grown at all. Once you have established which position you will argue, return to the last two chapters of Home Land and look for evidence. You'll also want to return to earlier passages in the novel to compare / contrast with your passages in order to support your claim.

As we noted in class last time, Lewis's narrative voice acts as a heavy filter, so you'll have to pay close attention in order to determine both Lewis's and Lipsyte's real attitudes.
