Both of today's stories feature a few cryptic, or at least unfamiliar, allusions. Each group will be assigned to quickly research one of the following:
- The title of "A Little Cloud" and the biblical verse to which it refers (142)
- The "orangemen" (145)
- Atalantas (143)
- The Isle of Man (146)
- The Lord Byron poem Little Chandler reads (150)
- Moulin Rouge (146)
- Lord Byron (150)
Work as a group to briefly research your reference, concentrating on what the reference meant (or could have meant) to Joyce at his time. After you understand the reference more fully, return to the story and examine it again, noting how your deeper knowledge changes your understanding of the text. Be prepared to give a brief, 2-3-minute gloss on the passage for the entire class.
